The University of North Alabama, also known as simply UNA, is a coeducational university located in Florence, which is the county seat of Lauderdale County, in the US state of Alabama, with a population estimated at a number of approximately 36 700 inhabitants, during the 2005 census. Florence is the largest and principal city of the Metropolitan Statistical Area known as ‘’The Shoals’’, and it is considered the primary economic hub of northwestern Alabama.
UNA was established in 1830, being originally founded as LaGrange College, and it was reestablished in 1872 as the first state-supported teachers college south of the Ohio River, one year later becoming one of the nation’s first coeducational colleges, being recognized today, as the state's oldest four-year public university.
Since it first opened its doors to students, the university has significantly grown, having today an enrollment of more than 7000 undergraduate and graduate students (2009), being recognized as a regional university with a major influence over the cultural, social and economic life of Northwest Alabama, offering students more than 60 majors, at the undergraduate level, through the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business, Education and Nursing and Health, as well as graduate programs in business administration, criminal justice, health promotion and human performance and special education, among other.
UNA’s athletic teams are known as the North Alabama Lions, who compete in NCAA Division II's Gulf South Conference, in various sports, including football, basketball, and volleyball, in all of which they won national championships, most of which are in basketball: 3 Gulf South Conference championships in 1977, 1981, and 1984, 3 GSC Tournament Titles in 1981, 1984 and 1988, appeared in NCAA Tournaments in 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1984 and 1988, and they won regional crowns in 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1984.
